Just after the holidays , Bomberman fans can get on with the partying right away. Because in a new, almost two-minute overview trailer for the upcoming Super Bomberman R2, it quickly becomes clear that Konami wants to pop the corks for the 40th anniversary of the series this year.

The trailer focuses on the four combat modes available in the game. With Standard we get the classic battle mode. In addition, the Grand Prix mode known from Super Bomberman R returns. Two teams consisting of up to three players compete against each other in typical team deathmatch or capture-the-flag style.

With Battle 64, the one from the free spin-off Super Bomberman R Online Battle Royale mode is also back on board. Through this, up to 64 players can compete against each other, similar to Tetris 99 . The game is played on several classic playing fields with up to four players each, whereby the playing fields can be influenced by one another.

However, the fourth mode in the list is an entirely new mode for the series. In Castle mode, up to 16 players split into two teams play against each other in a large arena. Scattered across the map are keys that must be collected by the attacking team and taken to treasure chests. The defending team can now set up blockades to prevent collection. However, if the defending team fails to stop them before time runs out, they lose.

Players can also use the editor to create their own arenas. The editor already looks very extensive in the material shown.

What is the game about?

Of course, a story mode awaits us again in Super Bomberman R2 . The cutscenes come with the same charm of the predecessor that was released for the launch of the Nintendo Switch on March 3, 2017. The eight Bomberman from the first part will also be playable.

The new game's antagonist is a "mysterious black moon that travels through space destroying one city after another," according to Konami on its website. He does this with the help of his minions – the Lugions and Lugibons. In order to end this chaos, the Bomberman in this adventure also receive additional support from small, local creatures called Ellons.

The gameplay of the story also differs from its predecessor. Of course there will be boss fights again, but the individual levels seem to be much larger and more open. The trailer suggests a focus on exploration and the use of Castle Mode.

The general look of the game also stands out from its predecessor. The camera angle is now again in a more classic top view. In addition, the colors are a lot more colorful and the shadows are softer.

Super Bomberman R2 will be released on September 14, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S and PC. Digitally, the game should even be released a day earlier. In addition, the game should have cross-play, which allows you to play with friends, regardless of which system they play the game on.
