Galaxy S23 is said to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with overclocked CPU

So far, the rumor mill has been at odds over whether the Samsung Galaxy S23 will come with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or the in-house Exynos 2300 on board. The answer could be: neither. Because the smartphone flagship is said to be getting an overclocked version of the new Qualcomm chip.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Qualcomm's new premium chip, was officially unveiled last week – but Samsung was mysteriously missing from the list of Qualcomm's official partners. A new rumor might explain why this was the case: Allegedly, the Galaxy S23 will receive a special version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 – one with a higher clocked CPU and GPU. This is reported by SamMobile and provides the screenshot of a benchmark test as proof.

This is what the overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 offers

The standard version of the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 offers a main CPU core (Cortex-X3) clocked at 3.19 GHz, four middle CPU cores at 2.8 GHz, three energy-efficient CPU cores (Cortex-A510 ) at 2 GHz and an Adreno 740 GPU running at 680 MHz. For comparison, the higher clocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for the Galaxy S23 is said to offer a main CPU core with 3.36 GHz and a graphics unit with 719 MHz.

However, for the power to have any additional use, the overclocked chip would need a better cooling system. In the past, the most powerful Qualcomm chips tended to overheat, which is why the manufacturer of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 focused on energy efficiency. Compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the standard version of the chip is said to offer a 35 percent faster CPU and a 25 percent faster GPU.

What is the name of the chip for the Galaxy S23?

It wouldn't be unusual for Qualcomm to also offer a higher-clocked version of its chipsets. For example, the Snapdragon 855, which had the model number SM8150, became the Snapdragon 855+ with a higher clocked CPU and the model number SM8150-AC. It is therefore conceivable that the Galaxy S23 will appear with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Pro or a chipset called Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 on board. The upcoming Samsung flagship should be presented either in early January or early February 2023.
