January 15, 2023

Kadokawa surprisingly announced today that a sequel to the second season , Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Japanese Made in Abyss: Retsujitsu no Ōgonkyō ), is currently in production. Below is the matching trailer.

The announcement was made today at a special event earlier in the day. It is not yet known whether the sequel anime is another series or even a new movie. A start date is therefore still a long way off.

The twelve part second season of Made in Abyss   ran on Japanese television from July to September 2022 and was again directed by Masayuki Kojima at the Kinema Citrus studio. Hideyuki Kurata once again acted as screenwriter. In Germany, ProSieben MAXX broadcast the second season in the original language with German subtitles as a simulcast. LEONINE Anime will release them on DVD and Blu-ray from March 2023.

Made in Abyss is based on the manga of the same name by Akihito Tsukushi, which is published in Germany by Altraverse in German. LEONINE Anime has already released the first 13-part season as well as the two compilation films and the sequel film on DVD and Blu-ray.

This is what Made in Abyss is about:

The vast Abyss cave system is the last unexplored place on earth. Generations of brave cave divers have devoted their lives to exploring this mystical system inhabited by dangerous monsters.

In a town on the edge of the Abyss lives the young sage Rico, who dreams of becoming a famous cave diver like her mother. On a brief exploration of the higher levels of the Abyss, she meets a little boy who turns out to be a robot. She saves him and names him Reg. Together they decide to explore the depths of the caves and solve not only the mystery of Reg's origins, but also the disappearance of Rico's mother.
