Best Electric Blanket: Never go to bed freezing again

Best Electric Blanket: Never go to bed freezing again

Which electric blanket suits you? We compare seven models so that you can make the right purchase decision. Because in addition to size and fluffiness, there are other important criteria for you to be happy with your new electric blanket.

On the couch or as a base for the bed – electric blankets are particularly practical in the cold season. Most models offer an automatic switch-off and overheating protection. So you don't have to worry if you fall asleep and forget to turn it off.

Many, but not all, electric blankets have been awarded the Oeko-Tex 100 certificate. This means that their material has been tested for harmful substances and classified as harmless to health.

There are other, sometimes large, differences in the heat output and operation. We will examine all of this for you below.

Beurer HD 75 Cosy: Soft electric blanket to snuggle up in

Cozy hours are guaranteed with the Beurer HD 75 Cozy heating blanket made of fluffy, soft microfleece. The area of 180 x 130 centimeters is ideal for snuggling up a person, both on the sofa and in bed. Technically, it is up to date. The traditional German brand has been producing heated blankets for more than 100 years and brings a corresponding amount of experience to its current product range.

The overheating protection and an automatic switch-off after three hours are just as much a part of the safety concept as the six temperature levels and the Öko-Tex 100 certificate. Not all electric blankets can show this high quality, as our comparison will show you.

You can wash the HD 75 Cozy with the 30 degree program in the washing machine or by hand. To do this, you disconnect the cable from the switching unit on the heating blanket, which can be washed with it without any problems.

The control panel of the HD 75 Cozy is slightly old-fashioned. And with its 100 watts of power, this Beurer model unfortunately does not live up to the competition, because other models can do more.

Technical specifications:

  • Power: 100W
  • Dimensions: 180cm x 130cm
  • Weight: 1,895g
  • Temperature levels: 6
  • Material: soft microfleece, Oeko-Tex 100 certified

When it comes to electric heating blankets measuring 180 x 130 centimetres, the Medisana HDW clearly outperforms the Beurer HD 75 Cozy: above all with its higher output of 120 watts and a lower price.

Medisana also uses the classic slider for the control panel, which switches through four temperature levels. You will quickly appreciate the higher heat output in cold weather.

Medisana makes no compromises when it comes to the safety concept. Overheating protection and the automatic switch-off after three hours let you fall asleep peacefully. The microfleece bears the certificate of the Öko Tex 100 standard. Unfortunately, you have to wash the Medisana thermal blanket by hand because it is not suitable for the washing machine.

Technical specifications:

  • Power: 120W
  • Dimensions: 180cm x 130cm
  • Weight: 1,700g
  • Temperature levels: 4

How much electricity does an electric blanket use?

With all the comfort that you treat yourself to with a cozy electric blanket, the question of power consumption arises. The electric heating blankets presented here have an output of between 95 and 150 watts. If you use your electric blanket for 60 minutes, this results in an energy requirement of 0.095 to 0.15 kilowatt hours. With electricity prices of around 45 cents per kilowatt hour, you have to reckon with around 5 to 7 cents per hour.

How much does an electric heating blanket cost on average per month?

For example, if you use your blanket three times a week for two hours each, this results in 1.03 to 1.62 euros per month. Since you mainly use them in the cold half of the year, that would be around 5 to 10 euros a year.

Beurer HD 150 Nordic: Large thermal blanket for frostbite

The more powerful alternative to the first two electric blankets presented is again from Beurer. An impressive 150 watts make the HD 150 Nordic model the flagship of our comparison. The 200 x 150 centimeter electric blanket made of cozy and non-toxic polyester offers even the biggest frostbite enough space to warm up. Thanks to the six temperature levels, you get a high level of comfort.

The Beurer HD 150 Nordic weighs almost 2.5 kilograms and is not only the largest and heaviest blanket in comparison, but also the most expensive. But the high performance justifies the price.

The outer material is Oeko-Tex 100 certified and keeps you warm and cozy for hours. While Beurer uses a simple control panel with a slider for the HD 75 Cozy model, the HD 150 Nordic offers much more attractive control in the form of an LED button switch.

The safety concept with automatic switch-off and overheating protection as well as machine washability up to 30 degrees are convincing. But we also miss a digital display and a timer function here.

Technical specifications:

  • Power: 150W
  • Dimensions: 200cm x 150cm
  • Weight: 2,460g
  • Temperature levels: 6
  • Material: Polyester, Oeko-Tex 100 certified

This Medisana model is a thermal blanket, throw and poncho all in one. Image: © Medisana 2022

Of course you can snuggle up in any of the electric blankets presented here. But the Medisana HB 677 has an interesting unique selling point: Thanks to its shape and several snaps, you can quickly turn the warming blanket into a throw or poncho. So you don't need to hold the blanket. If the power cable is pulled out of the switching unit on the electric blanket, you can even move around without taking off the electric blanket.

With an output of 120 watts and a size of 160 x 130 centimetres, the practical 3-in-1 heating blanket quickly reaches a comfortable temperature. The simple control panel with slider can switch through three power levels. That's okay, but finer tuning would be desirable.

If you forget to switch off the blanket, the automatic switch-off takes over after three hours. Overheating protection is also part of Medisana's quality standard. You can wash the blanket by hand or in the washing machine up to 30 degrees. An adjustable timer and a more modern control panel with a digital display would have greatly enhanced the HB 677.

Technical specifications:

  • Power: 120W
  • Dimensions: 160cm x 130cm
  • Weight: 1,560g
  • Temperature levels: 3
  • Material: soft microfleece, Oeko-Tex 100 certified

Costway: Modern low budget heating blanket with timer

The cheapest electric blanket in our comparison. Image: © Costway 2022

The Costway electric heating blanket is our price tip in comparison. It measures 163.5 x 130 centimeters. Although this model offers only 95 watts of heat output, it impresses with a modern control panel including a display. Another plus is the built-in timer with a running time of up to nine hours.

If you're not in a hurry to warm up, you might like our price tip. In any case, Costway has not skimped on safety, because overheating protection and the obligatory automatic switch-off are available.

With flannel as the soft outer material, the Costway electric blanket feels wonderfully cozy. It can be washed by hand or in the washing machine. Unfortunately, the thermal blanket did not receive the Oeko-Tex 100 certificate for tested freedom from harmful substances, and it is also comparatively heavy for its size. So you'll have to make a few trade-offs if you want it to be Costway's budget product.

Technical specifications:

  • Power: 95W
  • Dimensions: 163.5cm x 130cm
  • Weight: 2,100g
  • Temperature levels: 9
  • Material: Flannel
  • Overheat protection: yes
  • Automatic switch-off: yes, after 9 hours
  • Washable: yes, hand and machine wash (no indication of washing temperature)

+ Timer up to 9 hours – No Oeko-Tex 100 certificate
+ Low price – Low heat output
+ Modern control panel with display – Comparatively heavy

Camry CR 7436: With two heating zones ideal for two people

Arguing about the temperature is a thing of the past with this electric blanket. Image: © Camry 2022

The argument about the desired temperature under the electric blanket is over, because Camry brings you the solution with the CR 7436 electric blanket: It has two separately controllable temperature zones, each with 60 watts of power. The two control panels with display offer you eight power levels and a four-level timer.

The electric blanket measures 160 x 150 centimetres, is made of soft fleece and can be machine washed or hand washed at up to 30 degrees. Unfortunately, the upper material is not Oeko-Tex 100 certified.

There is also no automatic switch-off in always-on mode, which does not pose a safety risk, but consumes electricity unnecessarily if you forget to switch off the electric blanket. The Camry CR 7436 is technically protected against overheating and shuts itself down accordingly when it reaches a critical temperature. Alternatively, you can use the timer of up to ten hours to ensure that the heating blanket switches itself off.

Technical specifications:

  • Power: 120W (2 x 60W)
  • Dimensions: 160cm x 150cm
  • Weight: 2,400g
  • Temperature levels: 8
  • Material: soft fleece
  • Overheat protection: yes
  • Automatic switch-off: no, timer and always-on mode
  • Washable: yes, hand and machine wash up to 30 degrees

Kesser 22605: Soft cuddly blanket with 9 temperature levels

Small but powerful electric blanket: quick heat for one person. Image: © Kesser 2022

The smallest electric blanket in our comparison scores in several categories. With its 120 watts, the Kesser 22605 with the dimensions 160 x 120 centimeters generates just as much heat as other models over a larger area. This means that you reach your comfort level even faster. However, this electric blanket is a bit heavy for its size.

The modern control panel with display shows you all information at a glance. In addition to the nine-stage timer, this also includes the nine temperature levels with which the Kesser 22605 heating blanket heats you up.

The soft fleece ensures that you can snuggle up really well. Unfortunately, the upper material is not Oeko-Tex 100 certified. If you fall asleep, the safety system with automatic switch-off and overheating protection takes over and switches the blanket off after 90 minutes.

If you remove the controls, you can wash the electric blanket at up to 40 degrees in the washing machine or by hand. The Kesser 22605 is a small, solid electric blanket with great functions – and at a reasonable price.

Technical specifications:

  • Power: 120W
  • Dimensions: 160cm x 120cm
  • Weight: 2,000g
  • Temperature levels: 9
  • Material: soft fleece
  • Overheat protection: yes
  • Automatic switch-off: yes, after 90 minutes
  • Washable: yes, hand and machine wash up to 40 degrees

Electric heating blanket with battery: Sounds practical, but has disadvantages

In comparison, we deliberately did not present any electric blankets with battery operation. While there are large electric blankets that can run on batteries, they are poor value for money.

All of the products presented here offer the option of pulling the power cable with the control panel out of the switching unit on the ceiling. Then the heating blanket is wireless and you can move around freely with it. You don't have to worry about the blanket cooling down immediately either – most models retain the heat for quite a while.

If you want to cover short distances through the apartment with your electric blanket, the Medisana HB 677 is interesting: It has several snaps with which you can convert it into a poncho. Simply detach the power cable – you can move freely. If you feel that the heat is slowly decreasing, you supply the electric blanket with electricity again briefly and then you are free to move again.

In general, large electric blankets are designed for use on the sofa or as a pad in bed. Most models are also too heavy to walk around with for long periods of time. So that you don't have to do without soothing warmth when you're on the go, there are compact heating pads that help you with cold or tension.
