Samsung introduces fast flash memory UFS 4.0

Samsung has introduced a new flash memory. UFS 4.0 promises significantly more performance and greater efficiency than UFS 3.1. The new storage generation should make 5G smartphones even faster, find use in future cars and in the AR and VR area.

Samsung accommodates up to 1 TB of new UFS 4.0 storage in just over one square centimeter. As the South Korean manufacturer announced on Twitter, the new generation of flash memory is smaller, faster and more efficient than the previous version UFS 3.1. According to the manufacturer, UFS 4.0 enables read speeds of up to 4,200 MB/s and write speeds of up to 2,800 MB/s. That's about twice as fast as UFS 3.1.

Faster 5G smartphones with longer battery life

The new memory also works more efficiently. With one milliampere of energy, UFS 4.0 reads up to 6.0 MB/s. This is around 46% more efficient than UFS 3.1. This brings decisive advantages for the end user: not only should data-hungry 5G smartphones become even faster with Samsung's new memory generation. The increased efficiency could also have a positive effect on battery life.

In addition to smartphones, Samsung's UFS 4.0 with up to 1 TB of storage capacity should also be used in the automotive industry and fuel AR and VR applications. Wherever huge amounts of data need to be processed quickly. Mass production of the new flash memory is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2022. It is not yet clear when the first smartphones with UFS 4.0 will come onto the market. Samsung smartphones, which will appear in late 2022 or early 2023, could be among the first devices with fast storage.
