iPhone or Samsung: which is better?

Should it be an iPhone or a smartphone from Samsung? Maybe you already have a favorite and your gut feeling already indicates which manufacturer your new phone should be from.

By Sven Wernicke

The question of whether a device from Apple or Samsung is better arises every year when the current phones from the two manufacturers appear. It is and remains a question of faith.

At the end of the day, your taste and preferences are what count, not so much the technical data. There is no "better" or "worse". But the pros and cons of the iPhone and Samsung smartphones can affect what you end up getting. Let me tell you one thing in advance: your choice is by no means wrong.

iPhone vs. Samsung: The operating system

Apple versus Samsung also means duel of the operating systems. While Apple relies on its own iOS for the iPhone, Samsung relies on Android from Google. It's two different worlds. You have to choose one.

Benefits of Samsung

+ Open operating system with a huge range of apps
+ Popular Google services such as Search, Maps, Drive, YouTube already integrated
+ Harmonizes with other Android-based devices such as smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, streaming players
+ Many customization options
+ Attractive design with Samsung's One UI interface

Apple Benefits

+ Optimally tailored to the hardware of the iPhone
+ Simple, beginner-friendly operation
+ Focus on data protection and data security
+ Best interaction with other Apple products such as iPad, Apple TV and Mac
+ Perfect integration of Apple's services and apps

For example, if you have an iPad or Apple TV, the interaction with a Samsung smartphone with Android is not ideal. So if you already have Apple devices, it makes sense to use an iPhone. Apple is generally better at integrating its own services (iCloud, Apple Music, etc.) into its ecosystem than Samsung. Everything seems to be of one piece.

There are also differences in the provision of updates. While Samsung guarantees four years of support for its phones, Apple releases updates to close security gaps for some old iPhones even seven years after they go on sale. Apple is way ahead in this area.

Technology, design & processing

One thing is clear: the top-of-the-line devices from Apple and Samsung are top-notch. The currently fastest smartphone processor is in the current iPhone 13. Samsung, on the other hand, has been scoring since the introduction of the first Galaxy S model in 2010 with powerful displays and bold ideas such as the first foldable cell phone.

Benefits of Samsung

+ Courage for creative ideas
+ Samsung also uses what is technically possible and mature
+ Always excellent displays with high resolutions and refresh rates

Apple Benefits

+ Most powerful processors in the smartphone sector
+ Apple balances sophisticated hardware, design and software
+ No "experiments" that are quickly discarded

Apple may seem conservative with its iPhone compared to Samsung's high-end smartphones. But you can be sure that you are purchasing a mature, extremely powerful device. In terms of performance, Samsung lags behind slightly, but this is not noticeable in everyday use.

In terms of design and workmanship, Apple's iPhone and Samsung's top models don't take much. Both have high-quality materials and an elegant look. The same applies here: What you like better is a question of taste.

iPhone or Samsung – who has the better camera?

Even if users like to claim something different: the differences in the cameras of the iPhone 13 and the Samsung Galaxy S22 can be identified, but they are very small and hardly significant. In other words: Apple and Samsung deliver excellent cameras. Apple even manages to produce top-notch results with fewer lenses.

Benefits of Samsung

+ Triple and quad cameras even on cheaper smartphones
+ Easy to use camera app
+ AI image enhancement options ("Retouch Image", "Auto Adjust")

Apple Benefits

+ Good image results even with one-camera systems (iPhone SE)
+ High quality of the cameras
+ Image enhancement options ("Smart HDR"…)

If you are faced with the choice of whether it should be a current iPhone or a new Samsung device from the S series, you should not make the decision dependent on the camera.

Value for money: iPhone vs. Samsung

You can easily pay more than 1,000 euros for the best iPhone or a high-end Samsung – and you also get a lot for the price. Nevertheless, technically equivalent Samsung smartphones are usually cheaper and lose value faster than iPhones.

Benefits of Samsung cell phones

+ Significantly cheaper a few months after publication
+ Often attractive offers due to high competition for Android smartphones
+ Often bargains in the used market (dealer returns, refurbished, private sales)
+ Offers for trade-ins for new purchases available
+ More storage and features than iPhones for the same price

Apple Benefits

+ Stable value: Can still be sold at a good price even after two years
+ Offers for trade-ins for new purchases available

The higher purchase costs for the iPhone are put into perspective if you want to sell your old phone after two or three years or exchange it for a new one. Then you benefit from the value stability that Samsung devices do not offer in this form. Bargain hunters, on the other hand, will get their money's worth with the Apple competitor.

Cheap smartphones from Apple and Samsung

Getting into the iPhone world is not cheap. The cheapest model is the iPhone SE (2022) , which already costs more than 500 euros. Apple offers you an extremely fast A15 processor, the latest iOS operating system and 5G, but only a simple camera.

You can get a device from Samsung for less than 200 euros, for example the entry-level smartphone Samsung Galaxy A12 . It already has a quad camera system and a 6.5-inch screen.

A direct competitor of the iPhone SE is the Galaxy A53 , which is technically superior to the Apple model. Special highlights are the high-resolution 6.5-inch display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and the quad camera, which is amazing in this price range, for recordings almost at the level of the expensive Galaxy S series.

The best smartphones from Apple & Samsung

iPhone 13 Pro Max or Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra? Both are beautiful and are priced at over 1,300 euros in the version with 256 GB of flash memory.

For this sum, Apple gives you the best iPhone that the manufacturer currently has to offer. The 6.7-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display is a stunner, and there is also the powerful A15 chip for maximum performance. And the triple camera is beyond reproach. A dream!

The removable S Pen, the stylus for operating the phone, is in the housing of the Galaxy S22 Ultra . The AMOLED display with a peak brightness of up to 1,750 nits is also exciting – not even the iPhone 13 Pro Max can do that. For photography and filming there is a quadruple camera with a tenfold optical zoom and a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera.
