At the Mobile World Congress 2022 mobile phone trade fair, smartphones tended to take a back seat. Instead, new laptops, desktops and tablets were announced, including some innovative models. These are the highlights of the MWC 2022.
Huawei MatePad Paper: E-Ink tablet for reading & drawing
One of the unusual MWC announcements was Huawei's MatePad Paper. It is a 10.3-inch tablet with an E-Ink display and Android, supplemented by the HarmonyOS 2 user interface. The tablet, like an e-reader, can also be used in direct sunlight and the battery life reaches 28 days. Thanks to a resolution of 1872×1404 pixels, text is displayed sharply, but you can't do more than grayscale.
The notes app has been adapted for use with the Huawei M Pencil stylus, the tablet automatically recognizes handwriting and converts it into digital text. The large display is also ideal for reading PDFs. There is a lighting that can be regulated in 32 levels. A six-core processor, paired with 4 GB of RAM, ensures fast operation. Data ends up on a 64 GB internal memory, content can be transferred directly from a smartphone to the tablet. Thanks to Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, the tablet offers contemporary connectivity.

The stereo speakers allow the playback of audio books and audio notes, the voice can be recorded with four speakers. Also practical: the tablet can automatically translate texts into a wide variety of languages. The Huawei MatePad Paper appears in Europe for 499 euros, a Huawei M Pencil and a folio case are included. What's missing is a release date.
Huawei MateStation X: An iMac running Windows
Huawei's all-in-one PC MateStation X will soon challenge the Apple iMac in Germany too. The computer uses a 28.2-inch IPS display in a reader-friendly 3:2 format with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,560 pixels. The brightness is up to 500 nits, which should allow working even in side sunlight through a window. The screen can display 98 percent of the HDR color space DCI-P3, which is important for video editing.
The PC technology is accommodated in the housing and in the fixed stand. Interested parties can choose between the AMD Ryzen 5 5600H six-core processor and the AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, which offers eight cores. There is no graphics card. The RAM is 16 GB and the SSD is 512 GB. The case accommodates two 5-watt speakers and a 10-watt woofer, which should replace PC speakers. A 720p webcam is installed for meetings.
The connections: 2 x USB-C, 2 x USB-A and a headset port. The scope of delivery includes a keyboard with a built-in fingerprint sensor. The suggested retail price: 2,199 euros. Huawei has not yet announced a release date.
Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5: business ultrabook with gaming technology

With the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme G5, the manufacturer has presented a powerful workstation for applications such as 3D CAD software. It is striking that the technology in the professional ultrabook largely corresponds to that of gaming laptops. So if you want to look professional while gaming and don't like the gamer aesthetic, you'll get a suitable notebook here.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti built into the top model is actually the currently most powerful laptop graphics card, although the model only achieves a power consumption of 110 watts. The strongest model achieves 165 watts, which the ultrabook format obviously doesn't allow. Thanks to liquid metal thermal pads and vapor chamber, the graphics card and the 12th generation Intel Core i9 processor should stay cool enough.

Up to 64 GB of DDR5-4800 RAM and up to 8 TB of SSD storage should also satisfy demanding workstation users. Despite the low weight of 1.88 kilograms and the slim 17.9 millimeter design, there is still room for a large 90 watt battery in the laptop. The selectable 16-inch IPS display then finally screams "gamer" due to the 165 Hertz refresh rate, but there are a total of four display options for different purposes.
In addition to Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, there is a 5G modem and an NFC chip, as if the laptop were a flagship smartphone. 2 x Thunderbolt 4, an SD Express 7.0 card reader, 2 x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 and an HDMI 2.1 port are also offered. The security features such as Intel vPro, Intel Hardware Shield, the Nano Kensington Lock slot, a fingerprint sensor in the power button and, you don't hear that every day, an integrated tracker match the professional claim. This allows the laptop to be located for up to 14 days, even when it is switched off.
The powerful ultrabook workstation is expected to be released in June 2022 from 2,749 euros.
Lenovo ThinkPad X13s: The first ThinkPad with an ARM processor
Like the current MacBooks, the ThinkPad X13s also relies on an ARM chip with the mobile architecture known from smartphone processors. This also has a number of advantages with this Windows laptop: a fanless design, a long runtime of up to 29 hours and a low weight of 1.06 kilograms.
The new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 from Qualcomm is said to be 85 percent faster than its predecessor, which was found in the Acer Spin 7 and the HP EliteBook Folio 13. The processor comes with a 5G modem and can be combined with up to 32 GB of RAM. There's Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, a headphone jack and 2 x USB C 3.2 Gen 2. The 5 megapixel webcam is paired with an infrared sensor for Windows Hello face unlock. The built-in SSD measures 1 TB, the 13.3-inch display is optionally available as a bright model with up to 400 nits and full coverage of the sRGB color space for image processing.
The ThinkPad x Snapdragon will be available in May for 1,400 euros without taxes. The focus is on corporate customers.
