Sony has officially presented the new in-ears WF-1000XM4. The small headphones offer some of the functions of the larger over-ear brother WH-1000XM4.
The latest generation of completely wireless Sony headphones support High-Resolution Audio Wireless. Together with the further developed digital noise reduction and the new V1 processor, an even better listening experience should be guaranteed, according to Sony.
At the same time, the new in-ears should work even more energy-efficiently than the predecessor WF-1000XM3. According to Sony, the battery life is eight hours with active noise cancellation. The charging case provides enough juice for 16 more hours. If time is of the essence, the quick charge function allows you to listen to music for up to 60 minutes after only 5 minutes of charging.
The case also offers a quick charge function.
For the WF-1000XM4, Sony has, among other things, newly developed the 6 mm driver – this should now have significantly more power in the low frequencies and generate a high-precision suppression signal for this range in order to further improve noise reduction. Sony has even redesigned the earplugs for the WF-1000XM4.
Hi-Res audio support
The WF-1000XM4 supports high-resolution audio wireless thanks to LDAC. This means that around three times more data is transmitted (at a maximum transmission rate of 990 Kbit / s) than with conventional Bluetooth-compatible audio technologies. However, this requires a stable wireless connection to the playback device.
In addition, the DSEE Extreme AI technology known from the WH-1000XM4 over-ear headphones is supported, which can upscale sound sources to a higher quality. The technology dynamically recognizes instruments, musical genres and individual elements of each piece of music, such as vocals or instrumental parts, and restores the high notes that were lost when compressed.

New intelligent functions
Another function that is taken over by the WH-1000XM4 is the so-called speak-to-chat. As soon as the user speaks to someone, Speak-to-Chat automatically pauses the music and switches to ambient noise. In this way, the user can also talk with the earphones inserted, for example when he does not have a hand free. As soon as the conversation is over, the music continues automatically.
Quick Attention mode is also available on the WF-1000XM4. For example, if the user wants to hear an announcement or briefly say something, he only needs to place his finger on the left earphone to instantly reduce the volume and let ambient noise through.
With adaptive noise control
The WF-1000XM4 is also equipped with adaptive noise control. This intelligent function automatically recognizes where the user is and what he is doing – for example, whether he is traveling, walking or waiting. The function then adjusts the settings for ambient noise accordingly. In addition, the adaptive noise control can optionally learn to recognize places that the user frequently visits – such as the workplace, a fitness studio or their favorite café – and adjust the sound accordingly.
The WF-1000XM4 offers touch control. Users can activate noise reduction, ambient sound mode and quick attention mode or simply skip tracks, pause music or play songs.
Price and availability
The WF-1000XM4 will be available from June 2021 in black and silver for 279 euros (RRP). The headphones come with noise-isolating earplugs in three different sizes and a USB-C charging cable. It is water-protected according to protection class IPX4. However, the charging case is not waterproof.
