Activate UPnP: This is how you have to proceed

With UPnP you can control different devices over a network. With a UPnP server you can play music anywhere in the house, and "Universal Plug and Play" is used by devices such as WLAN printers and IP cameras. Here you can find out how to activate UPnP via the Fritzbox router and in Windows.

Activate UPnP via the Fritzbox

  • Enter fritz.box in the browser and press "Enter".
  • Enter your device password. You can find it on the bottom of the router.
  • Click on "View: Standard" at the bottom left to activate the "Extended View".
  • Go to "Home Network> Network".
  • Under "Network settings" check the box in front of "Transfer status information via UPnP".
  • Click on "Apply".
  • Go to "Internet> Shares".
  • Click on "Port Sharing".
  • Activate "Allow changes to security settings via UPnP".
  • Click on "Apply".

Activate UPnP in Windows

Many programs such as the Universal Media Server do the activation of UPnP themselves, but sometimes it is necessary to activate the function manually. It works like this:

  • Enter "media streaming options" in Windows search and open it.
  • In the opened window click on "Activate media streaming".
  • Media streaming via UPnP should now work.
  • If the associated service is not active, switch to the service setting in the window.
  • Double click on "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service".
  • Click on the "Start" button in the service status.

Summary

  • UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) can be used to control various devices over a network or specifically over the Internet.
  • Many routers have UPnP activated at the factory.
  • You can activate UPnP via the Fritzbox and in a similar way on other routers via the router user interface.
  • In Windows this works via the media streaming options.
