Set up Apple Watch: Here's how
Have you bought a new Apple Watch and want to get started with your smartwatch right away? We explain how you can set up the Apple Watch in next to no time.
Turn on, pair, and configure your Apple Watch
To use an Apple Watch Series 1 (or later) with watchOS 6.2, you must pair it with an iPhone 6s (or later) with iOS 13 (or later). You proceed as follows:
- Put on the Apple Watch. Adjust the bracelet so that the smartwatch fits snugly but comfortably on the wrist.
- To turn on the Apple Watch, press the side button and hold it down until the Apple logo appears.
- Hold iPhone close to Apple Watch and wait for the watch to display the pairing screen on iPhone. Then tap on "Continue".
- Alternatively, you can open the "Apple Watch" app on the iPhone and tap on "Pair new watch".
- Position the iPhone so that the Apple Watch can be seen in the viewfinder on the screen. Now the two devices are paired.
- Then tap "Configure Apple Watch" and follow the instructions on the iPhone and Apple Watch to complete the configuration.
- Apple Watch displays interaction tips while pairing. Tap the Display, Digital Crown, or Side Button for more information.
- When setting up the Apple Watch, you can also activate the cellular service for a compatible Smartwatch with GPS + Cellular. Alternatively, you can do this later in the Apple Watch app on the iPhone. iPhone and Apple Watch must use the same carrier.

Pairing and setup issues
The following problems can occur when setting up a new Apple Watch:
- A watch face will appear while you try to pair: The Apple Watch is already connected to an iPhone. You must first delete all Apple Watch content ("Settings> General> Reset> Erase Settings & Contents").
- The iPhone camera does not start the pairing process: Tap "Pair Apple Watch manually" at the bottom of the iPhone screen and follow the instructions on the screen.
Unpair Apple Watch
If you want to unpair your Apple Watch from the iPhone, proceed as follows:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap "My Watch," then tap your Apple Watch at the top of the screen.
- Tap the Info button (i) next to the Apple Watch that you want to unpair, and then tap “Unpair Apple Watch”.

Pair Apple Watch with new iPhone
If the Apple Watch is still paired with an old iPhone and you want to connect it to a new Apple smartphone, proceed as follows:
- Create a backup from the iPhone currently paired with the Apple Watch using iCloud.
- Configure the new iPhone. On the Apps & Data screen, select to restore from an iCloud backup, then select the most recent backup.
- Proceed with configuring the iPhone. When prompted, choose to use Apple Watch with the new iPhone.
- After completing the iPhone configuration, the Apple Watch will ask you to pair it with the new iPhone. Tap OK on the Apple Watch and enter your code.
Pair and switch multiple Apple Watch models
You can also pair several Apple Watches with your iPhone and then quickly switch between the different Smartwatches. That's how it's done:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then tap Apple Watch at the top of the screen.
- Tap "Pair New Apple Watch" and follow the on-screen instructions.
Switch to another Apple Watch
The iPhone will recognize the paired Apple Watch you are wearing and automatically connect to it. Just put on another Apple Watch and raise your arm.
You can also manually select an Apple Watch:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap "My Watch," then tap your Apple Watch at the top of the screen.
- Deactivate "Auto switch".
To check whether your Apple Watch is connected to the iPhone, place your finger on the bottom of the watch display and swipe up to open the control center. Then look for the green smartphone symbol for the status "Connected".
