5 times the speed of sound: flying with Hermeus in 1.5 hours from New York to Paris

The cruising speed has increased steadily throughout history. In aviation, however, there was a downturn in this millennium. While the Concorde still flew from Paris to New York within 3.5 hours by the year 2003, scheduled flights currently require 7.5 hours. In future, however, this should change again. For quite a number of companies have announced that they want to develop new supersonic aircraft for the civilian sector . The US company startup Hermeus has now made the most overblown promise. The engineers there want to develop an airplane within ten years that can fly at up to 5 times the speed of sound. The flight from New York to Paris would take only 1.5 hours.

In five years the first prototype will fly

The managers of the company also promise that it will no longer be necessary to make any great leaps in development. Rather, the planned ultra-fast aviators would largely rely on existing materials and technologies. However, this can not be checked. Because details about the planned construction have not yet been published. Within five years, however, a first prototype is to be developed, which already reaches the desired speed. The prerequisite for this, however, is that enough investors find the project. A first round of financing has already been successfully completed. However, the funds raised are only sufficient to prove the functionality of some basic technologies. For the construction of the prototype then further investments would be necessary.

The founders are already known in the industry

So far, Hermeus has mainly made big announcements, but still kept covered with further information. The fact that the company is nevertheless credible is linked to the founding team. Because AJ Piplica, Glenn Case, Mike Smayda and Skyler Shuford are well-known names in the industry and have worked in the past, including for Generation Orbit. The company in turn developed a supersonic aircraft for the US Air Force. So some basic expertise should be there. In addition to the technical implementation, however, then an economic operation must be guaranteed. Because the Concorde ultimately failed because of two things: It was not allowed to be used on many routes for reasons of noise protection – and it was simply too expensive to maintain.
