Foldable phones: Google makes Android fit for the latest smartphone trend!

In the meantime, Samsung , Huawei and the startup Royole have already launched three companies with foldable smartphones. These are intended to combine two product categories, so to speak: when folded, they function like a classic mobile phone. With full screen width, however, they can also be used as a tablet. So far, however, it is not yet a product for the masses: The Galaxy Fold is about to cost a proud 1980 dollars and is therefore marketed by Samsung also fittingly as a luxury product. The managers and developers of Google seem to be convinced that there is huge potential in the technology. Because they worked together not only with Samsung and Huawei during the development of foldable smartphones, but now also want to expand the operating system Android accordingly.

Almost all well-known manufacturers use Android as the operating system

This is important, because even the best smartphone should not be a bestseller, if no corresponding content is created for it. That's why on the one hand the app developers worldwide have to get involved in the new possibilities. On the other hand, the underlying operating system should also be adapted. Google is almost always responsible for new smartphones. Because with the exception of Apple put nearly all well-known manufacturers on Android as operating system. This was also the case with the new foldable smartphones from Samsung and Huawei. Both companies decided not to develop their own system and merely supplemented the Android base with their own further developments. So it was all the more important that Google at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona now clearly to the new technology known.

Foldable displays bring new challenges

In any case, Android CEO Hiroshi Lockheimer spoke about the joint learning process with the manufacturers, which will ultimately lead to the necessary adjustments to the operating system. Among the challenges is the fact that running apps need to be able to seamlessly switch between different screen sizes. No user should be willing to stop running applications first and then restart them again. In addition, in the tablet version of the screen can be used simultaneously for multiple apps in the future. For optimal use, a complete synchronization must be guaranteed here. This already worked very well for the Galaxy Fold in California. However, these were still individual adjustments. In future, Android will then be designed so that other models with foldable display can be developed standardized.
